Believe it or not, despite being married for 3 years, my husband and I never had the time to take our honeymoon. We travel quite frequently, but it always seemed to be with family and friends. So this summer, after many years of delaying our honeymoon, we finally booked our dream vacation to Greece! After seeing the breathtaking images of the caldera in Oia, the turquoise beaches in Crete, and stunning sunsets in Santorini that seemed to constantly invade my Instagram feed, I was completely sold on visiting this magical country.
When we first landed, I have to admit being a little worried and skeptical that the reality was not going to live up to my expectations. However, I couldn’t of been more wrong. As we checked into our hotel, I couldn’t stop staring at the view which seemed to have been painted before us. It was everything I hoped it would be and more. We stayed at the Elite Luxury Suites Hotel, which was definitely the most incredible hotel I’ve ever slept at. Our room was on the very edge of the cliff in Oia with a private pool and views I could’ve only dreamed of. I know it’s cliché to say, but the pictures truly don’t do it justice.
My husband and I then wandered the streets for hours, with the upmost difficulty to put our cameras down – every location was simply more beautiful than the next. After taking what felt like ten thousand pictures, we shopped in the cutest little souvenir boutiques and proceeded to go watch the sunset in Amoudi Bay. And how could I not mention the food?! Greek cuisine is incredibly delicious. I don’t think I ate a single unappetizing dish the entire trip. One place I would definitely recommend would be the Amoudi Fish Tavern. Located by the water in Amoudi Bay, it has the most beautiful outlook of the Santorini sunset, that will leave you wondering, which is more incredible… the food or the view? I still have dreams of their salmon tartar which was without a doubt the most amazing tartar I’ve ever had!
Oia, by far, had the most beauty among the cities we traveled to in Greece and if you have your eyes on it as your next dream vacation, my best piece of advice would be to splurge on your hotel. Seeing as Santorini isn’t really a beach island, choosing a hotel that has an incredible pool and a view on the cliff is quite important for this type of destination. Also, beware of the steps! They are literally everywhere. So make sure to bring a pair of comfortable shoes. Although there isn’t much to do in the city, the breathtaking views, the delicious cuisine and the romantic atmosphere definitely make it worth one’s while. It’s as if the island was designed for romantic honeymoons. With that in mind, Santorini truly is a magical place and I urge everyone to visit it at least once.
